After much hesitation I have taken yet another plunge and invested in expanding this site to my teaching activities. There are a number of reasons that compel this decision but the biggest is the chunky, slow and increasingly frustrating Learning Managament Systems (CMS) out there that are just not quite cutting it. There are enough tasks to get on with every day without having to wait on service breakdowns, servers that churn away without effect and students increasingly turning away from CMS because of the same. The second reason is that given the effort put into collating and annotating the content, I want to know that students are using the resource and not put off by the interface. Finally, the volume of information, the speed at which it flies past and the need to capture it on the move makes online repositories, which is honestly what this site still means to me, invaluable.
Being no code warrior I was thankful for the help and advice of my able tutors, Ben and Darryl. The transition caused me some angst but I think and hope the worst of it is over. Fingers crossed the new domain host is more reliable and less prone to ‘service shutdowns’ etc. I have yet to get the multimedia embedded previously working in this new version but will try and get to them soon as I can.
The template is not exactly what I want but the cost of hosting, registering and putting the site together is enough to absorb for now. I rather like the retro feel of the stapler and typewriter though I could do without the daggy faux woodgrain wall in the background. Still, I suspect I will by playing around with layouts whenever I find a moment. So if you see a different site next time you check in, look closer! It’s the same content rearranged. 🙂
