Why I call this a collection

I had a number of fancy terms in mind for this but decided that collection is probably a more honest way to sum up the motley mish mash of information I want to gather here. I have a magpie tendency to collect pretty things and my mind hops about like a grasshopper. Those who have met me will attest to the last. So, it is quite hard, given my goldfish memory to recall what I have said from one moment to the next (gosh – that is some strange animal hey?). Anyway, this then is an attempt to keep track of at least some of the volume of material I need to get through to perform my work as a teacher, researcher and writer properly and bring some order into my life.

I have finally succumbed to the inevitable and am, after a pause of many years, about to create a genuine online presence again. It is funny because I have long been sceptical about placing work and words online. My greatest nightmare from the days when I used to work on a Apple SE with the modem squawking in the background and tape drive whirring away is the loss of my data. It nearly happened for a while there a couple of hours ago working on this site and the air was blue with curses till the internet connection got up again. I don’t know what happened but I am definitely going to be thankful to be working with Joomla and CloudBase as they perform regular data backups. For the grand total of something like 30 Australian dollars I have a functioning website to play with. Fingers crossed, everything will be fine for at least a while.

I'm a research fellow at an Australian university where I work on a number of projects. These include projects to do with new media and migration and the Chinese diaspora in Australia, projects on the Malaysian internet, ethno-religious issues in Singapore and Malaysia. And, before I forget many of the photos I use on this site were taken by my sister, Jessie and myself. All rights are reserved.
